Portsmouth, New Hampshire, March 13, 2013- Leadership Seacoast, a non-profit organization committed to the development of informed and active community leaders, recently held its Arts & Culture program day at the Seacoast Repertory Theater. This marks the fourth of nine interactive workshops Leadership Seacoast will present this year.
Sponsored by Piscataqua Savings Bank and Seacoast Repertory Theater, the day began with a thorough examination of Portsmouth’s arts and cultural venues such as the Gundalow Company, Pro Portsmouth, 3S ArtSpace, Discover Portsmouth, Strawberry Banke, and The Music Hall. The afternoon sessions were held at The Seacoast Repertory Theater, where participants explored the critical issues facing the cultural scene of the Seacoast with presentations by Van McLeod, Commissioner of the New Hampshire Department of Cultural Resources, Russ Grazier, Executive Director of Portsmouth Music and Arts Center, and Denise Mallett, owner of Black Trumpet Bistro.
According to a comprehensive study completed in 2012 by the Americans for the Arts, more than $30,000 million is pumped back into the region in show related spending. Further, cultural venues in the Seacoast support 1,270 jobs in the community. “Because of program day sponsors like Piscataqua Savings Bank and the Seacoast Repertory Theater, we are able to present informative speakers to help the class discover the relationship between the arts, education, and economic opportunity,” said Jennifer Wheeler, Executive Director of Leadership Seacoast.
