35 Community Leaders Embark on Six-Month Leadership Program

TD Bank Celebrated as Program Year Sponsor

DURHAM, N.H.– Leadership Seacoast, a non-profit organization fostering informed and engaged leaders, officially announced the acceptance of thirty-five students into its 2012 program. The program began with an opening day retreat at the Browne Center for Innovative Learning in Durham, New Hampshire. The day was sponsored by TD Bank, who is also a program year sponsor.

For a second straight year, a record number of applications were received for the non-partisan program, which consists of nine daylong workshops about regional community issues. Specifically designed to challenge personal assumptions and expose its students to diverse ideas and leadership practices, Leadership Seacoast’s curriculum explores issues affecting the cultural, social, political, and economic lives of area residents through a variety of group work, presentations, field trips and other hands-on experiences.

Headquartered in Manchester, New Hampshire, TD Bank was recognized during the retreat as a program day and year-long sponsor with a contribution of $1,800. TD Bank sponsorship will allow Leadership Seacoast to expand its program and continue to present opportunities for community involvement in the Seacoast area.

“Every day, TD Bank and its employees contribute time, energy, and resources to the communities where we live and conduct business,” said Jennifer Wheeler, executive director of Leadership Seacoast. “We are pleased to see TD Bank supporting our organization, and honor our shared commitment to community and leadership development.”

Leadership Seacoast was founded in 1988 by a group of seacoast community leaders concerned with encouraging volunteer involvement and strong regional leadership. Entering its 24nd program year, the program has more than 700 alumni in the region. The organization’s board of directors worked tirelessly to select a diverse class with a strong mix of business types—for profit, non profit, large corporations and small business—from all industry sectors, and a healthy geographic sampling extending beyond the larger Seacoast area. The 2012 Leadership Seacoast class includes:

From Greenland, Scott Beattie; From Hampton, Karen Brieger Susan DeMarco, and Jason Canzano; Catalina Celentano of Nottingham; From Exeter, Eric Beauregard Jay Childs and Susanne Delaney; Mark Danie of Barrington; Sharon Delany of Rye; Heather Fournier of Fremont; Kelly Geradot of Stratham; From Eliot Janice Hastings and Wendy McCoole; Jennifer Hastings of Durham; From Portsmouth, Andrew Herrick, Corey MacDonald, Danny Edgecomb, Andrew Richmond, Allison Potter, Andrew Richmond, Monique Shevlin, William Sylla, Tara Trafton, Bridgette Desmond, and Matt Zanderigo; Anne Holliday of Newington; From Dover, Frank Laurino, Robert Gagnon, Christopher Lawrence, Joan Gile, Christopher Parker, Connie Roy, Sarah Serling, and Jillian Pierce of Rochester.

Starting with a photo trivia game testing guests’ knowledge of the Seacoast, the event featured a program overview by Executive Director Jennifer Wheeler as well as stirring testimonials by LS alumni Kathy Beebe (LS ’04), Tony Coviello (LS ’08), and Christine Sieks (LS ’11). All three spoke eloquently about how their lives have changed through their participation in Leadership Seacoast. Afterwards, guests toured Great Bay Community College’s health care classrooms and enjoyed relaxing chair massages from students.

So it’s no surprise that the firm is home to eight Leadership Seacoast graduates. All value what the program offers both participants and the community and these Appledore Engineering employees exemplify what the program stands for – effective, engaged leaders who’re not only knowledgeable about community issues, but exhibit effective leadership skills and seek opportunities for personal involvement.

“I’ve seen a big benefit in sending 7 staff members through the program,” says Gregg Mikolaities (LS ’01), vice president at Appledore. “They were exposed to issues and agencies that they don’t deal with in their day-to-day lives and developed community relationships that have lasted well beyond the formal program.”

Mary Persson (LS ’07), says she’s developed a “comfortable network of colleagues” throughout the Seacoast, a benefit that has paid dividends both personally and professionally. To their credit, LS graduates from Appledore Engineering have fulfilled their program commitments to become involved in the community. They serve on boards and advisory councils of non-profits, educational institutions and government agencies, have offered pro-bono services to community organizations and partnered with a local environmental non-profit to raise awareness and funds.

Appledore is among numerous Seacoast companies and organizations that prize what LS graduates bring back to the workplace. Charged with marketing Leadership Seacoast to its many constituents, procuring sponsorships, and fundraising, the committee is also developing ways to keep LS alums connected to the organization. The committee’s latest effort is a “graduate-level” program for alumni called “Leadership Insights.”

“The goal is to create an event where alumni can interact during a more consolidated program day,” says Pat Closson, MAD chair. “There would be a summary and update of key issues impacting the Seacoast, while giving alumni an opportunity to network and discuss what’s happening in the community.” The committee didn’t have to think long about how to generate alumni excitement. Everyone agreed that LS program days are what keep participants involved. As Closson notes, “Our program days are great, so Leadership Insights is an opportunity to build on that, with good speakers, a current topic and a group discussion.”

Whether it’s meeting with alumni or understanding how the Seacoast works, connections are among the main takeaways of Leadership Seacoast. But did you realize there’s a “family connection” as well? Family connections among Leadership Seacoast alums are testament to the program’s overall worth.

Tim (LS’ 05) and Nancy (LS ’10) Bassett share that connection. When Tim discussed his class day’s activities, Nancy said she’d never seen him so excited or animated. It wasn’t just him, either; everyone she spoke to about the program was equally positive. Tim says, “I told Nancy that Seacoast Leadership was one of the most enlightening experiences I’ve participated in as a professional. It allows a deeper understanding of areas of business in a very personal way, tying it into the fabric of the community in which you live. It was an outstanding opportunity to meet new people both personally and professionally.”

As Nancy went through the program, Tim allowed her to have her own “ah ha” moments (he didn’t even warn her about jail food!). As LS graduates, they have more meaningful conversations about their communities, making conscious changes to get involved with local affairs.

Tim sums it up, “We’re much more plugged into what’s happening, why, and how we can help. We’ve expanded our ‘social’ network; you’re always bumping into graduates that are doing things you may be able to get involved with.”

Denise Dixon (LS ‘11) influenced her husband, Frank, to consider becoming a member of Leadership Seacoast’s 2012 class, after participating in the first program day at the Brown Center. When Denise came home tired, bruised and limping, she couldn’t stop talking about her day. For Denise, the day’s most powerful moment was during one of the outdoor challenges. She felt a collective “physical power of positive wishes” from the class willing her to complete the challenge, a profound experience that led her to stay up discussing it with Frank late into the evening.

Both Denise and Frank appreciate the leadership skills that can be developed through Leadership Seacoast as well as the ability to inspire others. “What I’m really looking forward to is being around people who are enthusiastic about what they do,” says Frank. “I like to be around people who inspire me and I want to be connected to a creative energy source that can positively effect change.”
