The Economic Impact of the Arts in Greater Portsmouth

Randy Cohen, Vice President of Research and Policy for Americans for the Arts (AFTA), will be the featured speaker at the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce/Leadership Seacoast/Art-Speak Breakfast to be held at theSheraton Hotel in Portsmouth at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 13th, 2012.

Mr. Cohen will speak about the results of an exciting survey just completed that shows that the arts and culture industry in Greater Portsmouth makes asignificant contribution to our local economy.  Mr. Cohen will explain how the survey is conducted and the direct economic impact provided to our community as a result of $41.4 Million in total spending by audiences and non-profit organizations.  He will also discuss how Portsmouth compares to the other 182 communities and regions across all 50 states that collected similar data.  Mr. Cohen will be joined by a panel including representatives from Prescott Park Arts Festival and 3S Artspace and their respective business partners River House Restaurant and PixelMEDIA.

Art-Speak, the City of Portsmouth Cultural Commission, conducted the survey throughout 2011 in the Greater Portsmouth area by collecting information from arts and culture organizations and over 800 questionnaires from audiences at a wide variety of arts and cultural events.

The AFTA surveys are conducted every 5 years.  When last conducted in 2006, the survey showed that the Greater Portsmouth arts and culture industry generated $38 Million per year in economic activity.  Please join us at the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce/Leadership Seacoast/Art-Speak Breakfast to learn more about thepositive impact of the arts and the increase in economic activity to nearly $41.5 Million generated by arts and culture in the Greater Portsmouth area in 2011.

and $25 for non-members.
